Prime Minister Announces August Groundbreaking for Funan Techo Canal

PHNOM PENH, May 31, 2024 – Prime Minister Hun Manet today announced that construction of the Funan Techo Canal is set to commence in August. He spoke about the project at the opening of the Buddhist Cultural Centre of Cambodia in Phnom Sruoch district, Kampong Speu province, describing it as "a significant national symbol and a historic achievement for Cambodia."

Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, Sun Chanthol, noted that the canal had been meticulously planned by a team of nearly 50 experts. He emphasized that the project would have minimal environmental impact and is expected to bring substantial economic benefits in trade, tourism, urban planning, and construction.

The Funan Techo Canal, valued at US$1.7 billion, will stretch 180 kilometers long, varying in width from 100 meters upstream to 80 meters downstream, and feature two navigation lanes. The construction is anticipated to take approximately four years.

This ambitious infrastructure project will create a waterway linking Prek Takeo on the Mekong River to the sea in Kep province, traversing the provinces of Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep. An estimated 1.6 million people live along the proposed canal route.
